I urge you to support our 2023 state budget

Dear [Decision Maker],

Governor Murphy and members of the NJ Legislature,

As a New Jersey resident, I am writing to respectfully request that you ensure that the Fiscal Year 2023 state budget bolster New Jersey's commitment to reducing our state's cancer rate, helps identify cancers at their earliest and often most treatable stage, and ensures that cancer patients are adequately supported as they battle this devastating disease. Please support the budget resolution to increase funding for the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Screening Program (NJCEED) to $5 million.

When polled in October 2021, 83% of New Jerseyans supported increasing funding for early detection programs that offer screenings for breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer to uninsured individuals at no cost. Please

We all know cancer screenings save lives. Detecting cancer early increases the chances of successful treatment, improves survival rates, and saves patients overall on medical costs.
However, cancer screening rates during the COVID-19 pandemic declined significantly, suggesting that fewer cancers will be detected by screening and when they are found, they will be at more advanced stages. Indeed, cancer-related mortality rates have also increased during the pandemic.

We need to increase funding for the New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection Screening Program (NJCEED). NJCEED offers a critically important service to men and women who lack health insurance screening for breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer at no cost to the patient. Detected early, these cancers are more effectively treated. Failing to have these cancers detected early can lead to deadly consequences.

In the FY 2022 budget, NJCEED saw a reduction in state funds. The FY 2023 proposed budget restores NJCEED funding to $3.5 million. While we are supportive of the restoration, we are seeking an increase after two years where many patients delayed care, including accessing their doctor recommended cancer screening.

I urge you to support passing the Fiscal Year 2023 budget with the budget resolution to increase funding for NJCEED to $5 million.

Sincerely,
