All casino workers and patrons deserve clean air

Dear Policymaker, [Decision Maker],

As a New Jerseyan and as your constituent, I am writing to ask you to stand up for the health of all casino workers and patrons in New Jersey by supporting and co-sponsoring A4541/S1878 which would permanently ban smoking indoors at all New Jersey casinos.

More than 22,000 casino workers in New Jersey are forced to choose everyday between their health and their job when they come to work. The Smoke Free Air Act protects most of New Jersey's workforce and applies to almost all workplaces, EXCEPT casinos.

Exposing casino employees and patrons to secondhand smoke is a proven health risk. Second hand smoke contains over 7,000 substances, more than 70 of which are known to cause cancer. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that even separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate exposure of nonsmokers to deadly secondhand smoke.

When Governor Murphy temporarily prohibited smoking inside casinos earlier on in the pandemic, casino workers and patrons of New Jersey casinos were able to breathe fresh air for the first time inside casinos.

Meanwhile, New Jersey casinos thrived even as all of them were smokefree. Casino revenue in New Jersey was up 30% over the same time in 2019 and 32% over 2020.

The facts are undeniable. Prohibiting smoking inside casinos is both good for the health of casino workers and patrons while at the same time good for business.

It is time to once and for all permanently prohibit smoking inside all New Jersey casinos. I encourage you to support and co-sponsor A4541/S1878 and ask your leadership to bring the bill to a vote by the end of the year.

Casino workers and patrons deserve clean air.

Sincerely,
