Preserve Funding for Cancer Prevention Programs and Save Lives from Tobacco

Dear [Decision Maker],

I'm writing today as your constituent and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to thank you for your leadership during this most difficult time in our state and to ask for your help in continuing to address the cancer pandemic.

As our state continues to deal with COVID-19, we must also continue our fight against cancer. This year, more than 53,000 New Jerseyans will learn of their cancer diagnosis and an estimated 15,710 will lose their lives to cancer making it the second leading cause of death in the state. Low income, Black and Hispanic communities have been especially impacted, and those disparities need to be addressed.

While policymakers are addressing acute needs related to COVID-19, cancer patients need changes that promote innovation, expand access, and drive towards health equity to relieve suffering during the pandemic and beyond. I am asking you to preserve funding in the budget for both the Cancer Education and Early Detection Screening Program and the State Commission on Cancer Research, and to support a $1.65 per pack cigarette tax increase with additional funding dedicated to New Jersey's tobacco control program. These programs provide lifesaving, cost-saving and innovative services to New Jerseyans in need. We know that when cancer is detected and treated early, the cost of treatment is lower and the potential for survival is greater.

I know you have a lot of weighty decisions to make on behalf of your constituents, including cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. Funding lifesaving programs and passing strong legislation that will prevent cancer are especially important to me and my family.

ACS CAN looks forward to working with you to improve the health of New Jerseyans like me. We need your help to make fighting cancer a priority now more than ever.

Thank you again for your service to our state.
