Please Vote Yes on SB793 w/out Exemptions in Assembly Health
Dear [Decision Maker],
As a constituent and supporter of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), I am asking you to vote "YES" on SB793 as is with no exemptions when it comes before you in the Assembly Health Committee. Exemptions for any products weaken the policy, creating loopholes for young people to access flavored tobacco products that can lead to a lifetime of addiction. Flavored tobacco products including menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars have no place on store shelves in California. Exemptions being considered to turn SB793 into a "vape only" bill are a gift to the tobacco industry and sell out the very youth the bill is designed to protect. The tobacco industry purposely targets the Black community with menthol products with full knowledge that menthol makes it easier to start smoking and harder to quit. The evidence is clear, decades of predatory marketing practices have led to 85% of Black smokers using menthol flavored cigarettes. Today, Blacks suffer the highest rate of tobacco-related mortality of any racial or ethnic group in the United States.
