Please support a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance
Dear [Decision Maker],
As a Lake Charles resident and someone who cares about health, I urge and request you to take action NOW to protect the workers, musicians, citizens, and visitors of the City of Lake Charles from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke exposure. Lake Charles is the only large municipality in Louisiana without a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance. New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Alexandria, Monroe, and most recently Shreveport have all recognized the health benefits of smoke-free environments and have implemented comprehensive ordinances that prohibit smoking indoors in bars, casinos and gaming facilities. Workers, musicians, citizens, and visitors to Lake Charles deserve the same protections. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. It has immediate negative impacts on cardiovascular and respiratory functions. Secondhand smoke is also a potential risk factor for susceptibility to more severe COVID-19 symptoms because of the demonstrative impact it has on underlying health conditions including heart disease, diminished lung function, and associated risk of respiratory illnesses.
