Please Vote Yes on SB793
Dear [Decision Maker],
As a constituent and supporter of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), I am asking you to vote "YES" on SB793 when it comes before you on the Senate Floor. While life in California has paused to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, chronic diseases like cancer are not taking a break. During this public health crisis, we are reminded to be vigilant about our health, and the health of our kids and young adults. Studies have definitively shown that smoking have negative impacts on both lung function and the overall immune system. The most important thing we can do now to reduce tobacco addiction, particularly among youth, is to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products.Tobacco products are the number one cause of preventable premature death in the U.S. and preventing youth tobacco initiation and addiction is one of the most important public health actions policymakers can take. The use of electronic cigarettes among youth is skyrocketing. Recent data from the Food and Drug Administration shows use of e-cigarettes by high school students has increased 135% over the past two years. Tobacco products that come in candy, mint and menthol flavors are driving the e-cigarette epidemic and the unprecedented increase in youth usage. The tobacco industry purposely targets the African American community with menthol products with full knowledge that menthol makes it easier to start smoking and harder to quit. The evidence is clear, decades of predatory marketing practices have led to 85% of African American smokers using menthol flavored cigarettes. Today, African Americans suffer the highest rate of tobacco-related mortality of any racial or ethnic group in the United States.
