Raise Georgia's cigarette tax by $1.50 to save lives and generate revenue
Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent, I'm writing today to urge you to support raising the GA cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack with an increase in the tax on all other tobacco products to an equivalent rate.
Given the current state budget deficit, which is expected to be greatly exacerbated by the COVID-19 economic impact, an overall increase in the tax on tobacco products is a win/win for Georgia, saving lives and producing needed revenue for our state. By raising the tax on these deadly products, we can prevent kids from starting to use tobacco, encourage current smokers to quit, and reduce the deficit. In addition to lung cancer, tobacco use increases the risk for more than a dozen other cancers. Regular and significant cigarette tax increases with equivalent taxes on all other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are reliable sources of substantial new revenue while also reducing tobacco use and tobacco-related disease and costs associated with both.
As your constituent, I'm asking you to do something. Increase Georgia's cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack and increase the tax on all other tobacco products to parallel the cigarette tax. Help save lives and the future of Georgia.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
