Dear [Decision Maker],
As you prepare for the return of session next week, I want to remind you that cancer hasn't stopped. Cancer patients and survivors are among the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. To combat this disease, I encourage you to explore the benefits of increasing the tobacco tax by $1.50 per pack with a parallel increase in the tax on other tobacco products to 64% of the wholesale price.
Tobacco use increases the risk of lung cancer, heart attack, and stroke. The CDC says that older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions might be a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Increasing the cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack with a parallel increase in the tax on all other tobacco products through regular and significant tobacco tax increases will not only reduce the number of Iowans using tobacco products, it will bring an estimated $95.45 million of additional revenue to the state. Increasing the tax on all other tobacco products at the same time would yield additional health and economic benefits for the state. As the state faces an unprecedented budget shortfall, this additional revenue will be able to fill gaps and protect the public health sector from devastating cuts.
I wish you health and safety. Thank you for your leadership.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
