Dear [Decision Maker],

Thank you for all your work to protect the health of Minnesotans, Governor Walz.

As a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I am writing to thank you for signing three important issues into law!

The health policy bill made sure more Minnesota women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer have access to the treatment they need. The CDC's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program funds states and tribal entities to screen low income, underinsured, or uninsured women. Under federal law, any woman diagnosed with cancer through this CDC-funded program is automatically eligible for Medicaid. However, Minnesota statute adopted this narrowly and limits pathways to treatment. This language would make sure any woman diagnosed through a specific CDC program could access Medicaid for her treatment. This language change will directly benefit women screened through a program run by the American Indian Cancer Foundation.

The health policy bill also included language to remove barriers to clinical trials for Minnesotans on Medicaid. Clinical trials are a significant way to advance life-saving cancer treatments. For cancer patients on Medicare or enrolled in private insurance plans, their insurance covers the standard or routine costs of care. However, Medicaid patients are at risk of losing coverage if they participate in a clinical trial. Thanks to this fix, Minnesotans have the same opportunity to participate in a clinical trial, regardless of age or income.

Finally, thank you for signing tobacco 21 into law. I appreciate all you have done to prioritize youth tobacco prevention and to protect Minnesota kids from Big Tobacco.

Thank you for supporting the cancer-fighting issues I care about!

Sincerely,
