Protect Oakland's most vulnerable

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a volunteer of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I ask you to strengthen the Oakland Children Smoking Prevention Ordinance.

By eliminating the adult-only tobacco store exemption you can end the sale of all flavored tobacco products in Oakland, including menthol cigarettes. These adult-only stores are disproportionately located in the flatlands of East and West Oakland, which is home to a high number of low-income communities of color and youth. These are the same populations that already bear the burden of health inequities.

I also ask that you end the sale of tobacco in pharmacies, require a minimum of one compliance check per retailer each year, ensure penalties for retailers are higher than for clerks, and create a minimum price of $8.00 for all tobacco products, as well as a minimum package size of 20 for little cigars and cigarillos.

Thank you for your continued leadership in protecting our youth. Strengthening our current laws will help to promote health equity in Oakland by reducing the availability of cheap flavored tobacco products for youth and other vulnerable communities, ultimately helping to prevent tobacco-related illness and death.
