Ensure Access to Care for Cancer Patients

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), I am writing you to raise the voice of cancer patients, survivors and their families who need your help as we face this crisis together. Access to affordable, quality health care and protection from medical debt are crucial during this crisis when so many uninsured workers are fighting this pandemic on the front line in childcare centers, grocery stores, and nursing facilities. So many people have lost their jobs and will lose their health insurance, if they haven't already. Cancer patients are even more vulnerable now, and it is imperative that they be able to access their oral chemotherapy medications in the safety of their homes. Now more than ever, we need to protect the health of North Carolinians and help them avoid devastating medical bills and financial ruin.

For these reasons, I ask you to include the following measures in the General Assembly's COVID-19 Legislative Package:

-One thing our state can do right now to protect families is to expand the Medicaid health insurance program, so that more people have health coverage and can get care if they become sick without worrying about large medical bills afterward. States are making changes to Medicaid to protect their residents from the Coronavirus. We should too.

-Close the chemotherapy coverage gap and allow cancer patients to access oral chemotherapy treatment at home by including in your recommendations the language from the Cancer Treatment Fairness Act (H480). In North Carolina, cancer patients pay dramatically higher out of pocket costs for their oral chemotherapy medication. 46 states have provided cancer patients with the protection of accessing their cancer treatment at home by treating the out of pocket costs to patients similarly for infusion chemotherapy and oral chemotherapy. Cancer patients need extra protection now.

Thank you for our leadership for the people of North Carolina during this time of crisis. I urge you to close the health insurance coverage gap in a way that works for North Carolina and provide fairness in terms of out of pocket costs to cancer patients in accessing their oral chemotherapy medications.

Sincerely,
