Oppose Substitute for HB 119 Tobacco Marketing, Age of Sale and Purchase
Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), I am writing to ask you to prioritize the opportunity to protect Alabama kids from a lifetime of addiction over tobacco industry profits and oppose the proposed substitute for House Bill 119. The tobacco industry has a long history of marketing to youth to addict the next generation to their deadly products. They cannot be trusted to do what is in the best interest for Alabama kids. As you know from your role sponsoring and deliberating legislation, the devil is in the details. ACS CAN supports strong Tobacco 21 policy that not only raises the age of sale for all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to 21, but also defines tobacco products consistent with FDA definitions, provides public education as well as training and technical assistance to retailers, and implements measures for active enforcement, such as retailer licensing and penalties, including license suspension and revocation for non-compliant retailers. Strong laws DO NOT penalize youth, retain separate categories of products that continue to exempt them from other tobacco control laws, or preempt other jurisdictions from passing strong tobacco control laws.
