Please vote Yes on HB 34 Tanning for minors

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am your constituent and would like to ask you to vote YES on HB 34, Tanning for Minors.
We anticipate the bill coming up for vote again soon. When this happens, I hope that I can count on you to vote yes on this very important bill.
The greatest avoidable known risk factor for skin cancer is the use of indoor tanning devices; tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 59%, which I hope we can agree is a staggering statistic. It goes without saying that we should also be doing what we can to educate our kids on the need to wear sunscreen, cover up, seek shade when possible, and do what they can to avoid even one sunburn. I think the state of Utah owes it to our kids to do everything we can to protect them from becoming a statistic. Bills like HB 34 work and are good for our children's future.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer categorizes tanning devices as its highest cancer risk category (Class 1) "carcinogenic to humans;" the same designation given to tobacco products. We don't let parents choose if their children get to use tobacco or not, and indoor tanning devices are in the same category. Shouldn't we protect Utah's kids from these carcinogens as well?

Current Utah law allows those under age 18 to use indoor tanning devices with parental consent. A parent is supposed to be present to provide this consent on every visit to a tanning facility.

Multiple studies have shown that youth are able to purchase a tanning session without parental permission, even if it is required by law.

In order to adequately protect Utah youth from the dangers of indoor tanning, Utah law must prohibit the use of these devices by anyone under the age of 18.

When you vote on this bill again, I hope that you will put the health of Utah's youth first and vote yes on this important bill.

Thank you,
