Thank you for voting YES on HB 34 Tanning For Minors

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am your constituent and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and I just wanted to take the time to thank you for voting YES on H.B. 34, Tanning for Minors.

We anticipate the bill coming up for discussion and vote again very soon. When this happens, I hope that I can count on you to vote yes for a second time and even helping us to get the 38 votes that we need to send this important issue to the Senate. I know that convincing your fellow representatives to change their vote to yes will be tough, but here is some information that I think will be helpful.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer categorizes tanning devices as its highest cancer risk category (Class 1) "carcinogenic to humans;" the same designation given to tobacco products. We don't let parents choose if their children get to use tobacco or not, and indoor tanning devices are in the same category. Shouldn't we protect Utah's kids from these carcinogens as well?

Current Utah law allows those under age 18 to use indoor tanning devices with parental consent. A parent is supposed to be present to provide this consent on every visit to a tanning facility.

Many studies have shown that laws that allow parents to give written permission to their children to use indoor tanning devices or accompany them to tanning salons are not associated with reduced use of indoor tanning among youth. Multiple studies have shown that youth are able to purchase a tanning session without parental permission, even if it is required by law.

In order to adequately protect Utah youth from the dangers of indoor tanning, Utah law must prohibit the use of these devices by anyone under the age of 18. A 2018 study found that indoor tanning prevalence among female high school students in states with age restriction laws was 47 percent lower than among those not affected by such laws.

I thank you again for voting YES to HB 34 and I look forward to you voting yes again and being a champion for this cause. Thank you for protecting the youth of Utah.

Sincerely,
