Vote YES on HB 1120

Dear [Decision Maker],

On behalf of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and our advocates, we ask you to vote YES on HB 1120.

Virginia's current tobacco tax remains unchanged since 2005 and is well-below the national average of $1.81. Currently, Virginia's tobacco tax is 30 cents per pack (50th among all states and DC). Virginia needs to do better!

Quick facts:

Tobacco is still the leading cause of preventable death and disability in the US and accounts for 1 out of every 5 deaths.
The long-term health care cost savings from adult and youth smoking declines in Virginia will be at approximately $1.60 billion.
National data shows about 95 percent of adult smokers begin smoking before they turn 21.
Projected New Annual Revenue from Increasing the Cigarette Tax by $1.50 Per Pack: $396.19 million
In 2019, nationwide 31.2% of high school students and 12.5% of middle school students 6.2 million kids altogether reported using some type of tobacco product, according to the 2019 National Youth Tobacco Survey.

Again, we urge you to vote YES on HB 1120.

Sincerely,
