Please Support the Introduction & Passage of an Ordinance that Ends the Sale of Flavored Tobacco

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a resident of the City of Los Angeles and a supporter of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), I applaud the city for taking steps to protect youth from the dangers of flavored tobacco products. Tobacco products are the number one cause of preventable premature death in the U.S. and preventing youth tobacco initiation and addiction is one of the most important public health actions our policymakers can take.
The use of electronic cigarettes among youth is skyrocketing. The United States Surgeon General has labeled it an epidemic and recent data from the Food and Drug Administration shows use of e-cigarettes by high school students has increased 135% over the past two years.

Tobacco products that come in candy, mint and menthol flavors are driving the e-cigarette epidemic and the unprecedented increase in youth usage.

I urge you to support the introduction an ordinance to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products without exemptions. The tobacco industry has long used menthol flavoring in cigarettes to mask the harshness of smoking to ease initiation. While hookah, which is available in a wide variety of flavors, has been gaining popularity, particularly among young adults. Many hookah smokers incorrectly believe that it is less harmful or addictive than cigarette smoking. When in fact, smoking water pipes, as well as breathing secondhand smoke from water pipes, is at least as harmful as exposure to cigarette smoke.

Exemptions for these products will weaken the ordinance, creating loopholes for young people to access flavored tobacco products that can lead to a lifetime of nicotine addiction

When this item comes before you in the Health, Education, Neighborhoods, Parks, Arts, and Rivers Committee, I ask you to please support the introduction an ordinance to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products without exemptions for menthol cigarettes, hookah, and 21 and over tobacco shops.

Thank you in advance for your leadership in protecting youth in the city of Los Angeles.

Sincerely,
