Governor Cuomo, please restrict the sale of all flavored tobacco products!

Dear [Decision Maker],

You are right. Tobacco companies are hooking kids with flavors like chocolate, strawberry and menthol.

As a NY resident, I support your call to restrict the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, given nearly 40% of high school seniors now report using e-cigarettes. At the same time, there is also an urgent need to protect youth from all flavored tobacco products. It's time to stop Big Tobacco from hooking young people with menthol cigarettes.

Research shows menthol flavoring makes it easier to start smoking and harder to quit.

Long before cigarette companies started adding fruit, candy, and alcohol flavorings to cigarettes, they were manipulating levels of menthol to addict new, young smokers. The tobacco industry has spent decades manipulating its menthol brand-specific product line to appeal to youth, African Americans and the LGBTQ community.

Here are some fast facts about menthol:
* Menthol is a flavor.
* Menthol is a numbing agent, allowing the smoker to inhale more deeply.
* Menthol cigarettes are targeted at kids: In 2014, nearly 54 percent of youth smokers reported using menthol.
* Over 90 percent of African American youth that smoke, smoke menthol cigarettes.

As you prepare your upcoming Executive Budget, I urge you to include language to restrict the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes.

Thank you and I look forward to your reply.
