Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I'm reaching out to urge you to please work with your colleagues to quickly pass legislation to help protect our kids from Big Tobacco. Restricting the sales of all flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes, including mint and menthol products is one component of a comprehensive strategy in tobacco prevention policies. We know flavors help hook kids into a lifelong deadly addiction to tobacco.

Permanently preventing the sale of all flavored tobacco products including e-cigarettes that are designed and targeted at our youth is a logical next step for our state. Currently there are over 15,500 flavors of e-cigarette products on the market, and studies by the CDC and FDA tell us that over one third of all middle and high school students who use e-cigarettes say that the availability of flavors was the reason they did.

Big Tobacco has also targeted minority communities, including African American, Latino and LGBTQ communities, with menthol products for years. Not only is menthol a candy flavor and an analgesic, it aids in the absorption of nicotine into mouth tissues at a faster rate. The faster the nicotine absorption, the more addicted the user becomes, and the more poison they ingest. Menthol cigarettes are targeted at kids and youth use of menthol tobacco products including e-cigarettes have increased over the years. Over 90% of African American youth that smoke, smoke menthol cigarettes. We must stymie this public health epidemic and stop Big Tobacco from using flavored products to addict our kids to their deadly products.

I urge you to please work with your colleagues in the House and Senate to quickly pass a flavor tobacco sales restriction that includes all flavors, including mint and menthol, and take another step forward in the fight against Big Tobacco.

I look forward to hearing your response on this important issue.
