Please restrict flavored tobacco products in Albany County

Dear [Decision Maker],

Despite all the progress we have made in Albany County and throughout the state to fight tobacco use, tobacco companies are luring kids to this deadly addiction with flavors. In fact, nearly 40% of high school seniors across the state are using e-cigarettes, which now come in more than 15,000 flavors. There is an urgent need to protect our youth from all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes. As an Albany County resident, I urge you to vote yes on Local law E to restrict the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes.

Why is it critical to restrict tobacco flavors? Flavors entice kids to begin using tobacco products. In fact, 81 percent of youth who had ever used a tobacco product started with a flavored product. This isn't surprising as tobacco companies have a long history of developing and marketing flavored tobacco products as "starter" products that attract kids. Flavors improve the taste and reduce the harshness of tobacco products, making them more appealing and easier youth to try them and ultimately become addicted.

Research shows menthol flavoring makes it easier to start smoking and harder to quit. Long before cigarette companies started adding fruit, candy, and alcohol flavorings to cigarettes, they were manipulating levels of menthol to addict new, young smokers. The tobacco industry has spent decades marketing its menthol brand-specific product line to appeal to youth, African Americans and the LGBTQ community.

Please vote YES on legislation to restrict the sale of ALL flavored tobacco products across our county, including menthol cigarettes.

Sincerely,
