Please restrict flavored tobacco products in Albany County
Dear [Decision Maker],
Cherry, strawberry, peach, grape, milk chocolate, mint chocolate chip, honey berry, mango, sour apple. Sound like dessert? No, these are flavors of tobacco products. Despite all of the progress we have made in Albany County and throughout the state to fight tobacco use, tobacco companies are hooking kids with flavors. As an Albany County resident, I urge you to vote yes on legislation to ban the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol and e-cigarettes.Why is it critical to restrict tobacco flavors? Flavors entice kids to begin using tobacco products. In fact, 81 percent of youth who had ever used a tobacco product started with a flavored product. This isn't surprising as tobacco companies have a long history of developing and marketing flavored tobacco products as "starter" products that attract kids. Flavors improve the taste and reduce the harshness of tobacco products, making them more appealing and easier for beginners often kids to try and ultimately become addicted. The numbers in New York are staggering and scary. Between 2014 and 2018, the e-cigarette use rate by high school students increased fully 160%, from 10.5% to 27.4%. To change these grim statistics, we must act now and stand up to the tobacco industry. Please vote YES on legislation to restrict the sale of ALL flavored tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, AND including menthol.
