Please sign the "Tobacco 21" bill

Dear [Decision Maker],

Being a cancer survivor, you know first-hand the importance of preventing cancer. This is why I'm asking you to please sign HB 1169/SB 895 Business Regulation - Tobacco Products and Electronic Smoking Devices which prohibits retailers from selling cigarettes, e-cigarettes and other tobacco products to youth under age 21, as part of a comprehensive strategy to prevent youth from starting to use tobacco.

Tobacco 21 is predicted to reduce smoking prevalence by about 12 percent and smoking-related deaths by nearly 10 percent for future generations. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 27 percent of cancer deaths in Maryland are directly attributable to smoking. Unless current smoking rates decline, 92,000 Maryland kids alive today will eventually die prematurely from smoking-related illnesses.

Nationwide, three out of four adults support tobacco 21, including seven out of ten adults who smoke. At least 9 other states and 440 localities have already passed laws to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to those under age 21. It's time for Maryland to join them!

You have the opportunity to make an impact on the health of Maryland's youth. Please sign the Tobacco 21 bill into law to save lives from tobacco related illnesses.
