Protect kids from skin cancer! Vote YES on House Bill 124

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent, I am asking you to support to vote yes one more time and support HB 124 to prohibit minors under the age of 18 from using tanning beds. Doing so will protect our Maryland teens from developing skin cancer later in life, especially melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Many teens feel peer pressured to have tanned skin and the tanning bed industry knows this. They market directly to teens, creating specials for prom, homecoming and back to school. 7.2% (47,194) of high school students currently use indoor tanning beds in Maryland despite the risks, or may not recognize that the so-called "healthy" tans they get now, could cause skin cancer in the future.

The evidence clearly shows that the use of indoor tanning beds increases the risk of skin cancer and studies have found that using a tanning bed before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 59%. Prohibiting minors from using tanning beds will effectively reduce skin cancer incidence and mortality rates in our state.

We can, and must, do more to reduce death and suffering from cancer in our state. As your constituent, I am asking you to please vote yes one more time and support HB 124 to prohibit minors under the age of 18 from using tanning beds.

Sincerely,
