Flavors Hook Kids--Support Int 1345 and Int 1362

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor Int 1345-2019 and Int 1362-2019, legislation to restrict the sale of all flavored tobacco and electronic cigarettes, including menthol, mint, and Wintergreen. Please contact Councilmembers Fernando Cabrera and Mark Levine to add your name to these important bills!

Flavors in all tobacco products and electronic cigarettes are the lure to initiating youth to a lifetime of tobacco use and nicotine addiction. In fact, flavors are frequently listed as one of the top reasons why children start using e-cigarettes and mint, wintergreen and menthol flavors make cigarettes easier to smoke and harder to quit.

Recent spikes in the use of e-cigarettes make clear that more must be done to regulate tobacco products and the industry's deceptive marketing practices, particularly with the use of flavors to attract children to their products.

And many people who smoke wrongly think menthol cigarettes are less harmful. Tobacco companies have exploited and specifically targeted minority communities, particularly African-Americans, with intense advertising and promotional efforts to create this myth.

It is time for New York City to restrict the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, and including menthol, mint, and wintergreen. By passing these two bills together we can reduce the use of tobacco products, especially among children, and reduce the death and disease associated with its use.

I urge you to stand up to the tobacco industry by cosponsoring Int 1345-2019 and Int 1362-2019.
