Support the First Tobacco-Free Generation in RI!

Dear [Decision Maker],

In December 2018, a new law took effect in Massachusetts that raised the sale age for ALL tobacco products including electronic cigarettes from 18 to 21. Our neighbors to the north have taken a vital step to protect young people from tobacco and nicotine addiction. It's time for Rhode Island to follow Massachusetts' lead by passing Tobacco 21.

Consider the facts:

95 percent of smokers start before the age of 21.

The ages of 18 to 21 are a critical period when many smokers move from experimental smoking to regular, daily use.

90 percent of those who provide cigarettes to younger kids fall in the 18-21 age range.

Raising the tobacco sale age to 21 would reduce the likelihood that a high school student will be able to legally purchase tobacco products for other students and underage friends.

The use of electronic cigarettes among youth has skyrocketed and is cause for serious concern. An alarming 20.1 percent of Rhode Island high school students use electronic cigarettes.

#Tobacco21RI will reduce tobacco use among young people, save lives and help make the next generation tobacco-free! Please tell Senator Coyne that you would like to cosponsor her Tobacco 21 bill. Thank you for your consideration.
