save lives, save money: raise the tax on packs of cigarettes
Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent and a volunteer of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I am asking you to support a $2.00 increase in the state's tobacco tax. Tobacco is a burden on residents of Indiana physical and economic health. 11,000 Hoosiers die every year from tobacco use. We cannot delay any further on raising the tax to prevent cancer and save lives.
By raising the tax on packs of cigarettes by $2.00, 71,000 Hoosiers would quit smoking, $358+ million would be added to Indiana's revenue and Indiana businesses would save $22 a day per smoking employee. Most important, raising the tax would help prevent our kids from ever purchasing that first pack of cigarettes.
Please take action to ease Indiana's tobacco burden by supporting a $2.00 increase in the state's tobacco tax in this year's budget. We don't have time to wait.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
