Protect our children by supporting H7136 to prohibit tanning by minors

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent and volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I'm writing to urge you to help reduce the burden of cancer in Rhode Island by supporting H7136, which prohibits teens under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices.

As you are aware, prevention is a critical component in helping to lower cancer-related deaths. One of the most avoidable risk factors for skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet radiation through the use of indoor tanning devices. This legislation, H7136, will do just that: prevent children from being exposed to this dangerous radiation.

Indoor tanning use before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma, the most serious and deadliest form of skin cancer, by 59 percent, squamous cell carcinoma by 67 percent, and basal cell carcinoma by 29 percent. Rates increase even more dramatically when tanning devices are used before age 25. Even more concerning, we have seen the incidence rate of melanoma in Rhode Island increase 44% from 2015 to 2018.
I urge you to help protect our most vulnerable from the dangerous effects of these devices by supporting H7136. Thank you for your time and consideration of this important issue.

Sincerely,
