I support making kids' meal beverages healthier!
Dear [Decision Maker],
As someone who cares about cancer, I am writing to ask for your support for legislation (S.70) that would require restaurants to promote healthy beverage choices with kids' meals by making the default beverage water, sparkling water, milk, 100% juice or juice with added sugars. We know that sugary drinks are the largest source of added sugars in American's diets, and that diet-related diseases are on the rise, even in amongst our youngest children. Send a message to your Representative asking them to vote YES to promote healthy drinks for our kids!
For MOST Americans who do not use tobacco, the most important behaviors to reduce their cancer risk are weight control, dietary choices and physical activity. We know that excess weight increases the risk for at least 13 different cancers, increases the likelihood cancers will return and decreases the chances someone will survive several cancers. When it comes to kids, nearly 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese! In fact, obesity rates have tripled among children in the U.S in recent decades. We know childhood overweight and obesity makes it more likely these conditions will follow them to adulthood. Sugary drinks are the leading source of added sugar and one of the leading sources of calories in Americans' diets. Children ages 9-18 consume almost double the recommended calories from added sugars, increasing their long term cancer risk.
Please support S.70 by voting yes on healthy beverages for kids meals and protecting our children from the dangers of obesity. Thank you for supporting the fight against cancer in Vermont!
