Help Serve Kids Better--Support Int 1064-2018
Dear [Decision Maker],
As a New Yorker I am concerned about the health of our kids! Childhood obesity rates are increasingly threatening the long-term health of New Yorkers. The rate of childhood obesity increased 27.4 percent in the past twenty years. Being overweight or obese is clearly linked to an overall increased risk of cancer. According to research from the American Cancer Society, excess body weight is thought to be responsible for about 8% of all cancers in the United States, as well as about 7% of all cancer deaths.
One of the leading contributors to obesity is the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Sugary drinks are the top source of added sugars in the diets of our kids. It is hard enough for parents to keep their kids eating healthy while at home. Healthy kids meals at restaurants are incredibly rare and often feature soda and other sugary drinks. We can do better!
As your constituent and an advocate with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I ask that you support Int 1064-2018, legislation that makes healthy drink options like water and low-fat unflavored milk the norm on kids' menus in NYC restaurants.
