Please Use The New Tobacco Tax Revenue For Smoking Cessation at NYCHA
Dear [Decision Maker],
In 2018 NYC has a historic opportunity to help its most vulnerable citizens quit smoking once and for all. Beginning this summer a new tobacco tax will generate revenue for NYCHA. A portion of this money should be dedicated to helping public housing residents who use tobacco quit the deadly habit.
While I understand the deep funding crisis that NYCHA is currently facing and the many serious challenges that residents of public housing face, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in New York City. and public housing residents have some of the highest rates of tobacco use citywide. It is especially important that we act now before all public housing units nationwide go smoke-free in July.
Since this revenue is being generated by users of tobacco a substantial portion of that revenue must be dedicated to smoking cessation programs at NYCHA. I hope that you will continue New York City's leadership in the fight against tobacco. I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely,[Your Name] [Your Address] [City, State ZIP][Your Email]
