Vote YES on SB 149 to support palliative care
Dear [Decision Maker],
I am your constituent and I am writing to ask that you support SB 149.
Kentuckians suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses face more than just the symptoms of their disease. They often face debilitating stress that accompanies their diagnosis as well as difficult side effects from treatment. Often this greatly compromises a patient's quality of life, including the ability to stick with treatment, enjoy time with family as well as continue to work and feel productive. To support quality of life during cancer treatment, the healthcare community is increasingly turning to palliative care, and for anyone facing a chronic disease, palliative care can be life-changing.Palliative care is coordinated patient care that treats the patient as well as the disease. This care improves the quality of life of cancer patients and cancer survivors, saving lives and reducing health care costs. It is conducted by a team of doctors and other healthcare professionals working together to provide effective treatment of symptoms caused by cancer and other serious illnesses. But for palliative care to be effective, patients must not only know it exists but have access to it.SB 149 will improve overall patient outcomes by establishing a Palliative Care Advisory Council comprised of state experts and empower the state health department to provide palliative care information through their website and through other channels for medical professionals, patients, families, caregivers and the general public in Kentucky.
This year, an estimated 26, 220 Kentuckians will be diagnosed with cancer and will need comprehensive palliative care. Please do not ignore this opportunity to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families, and vote YES on SB 149.
