Protect Kansas kids - support HB 2231

Dear [Decision Maker],

Raising the tax on cigarettes by $1.50 per pack with an equal tax on other tobacco products will prevent nearly 14,000 Kansas children from ever taking up smoking. As a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I support HB 2231 to increase our state tobacco tax.

On March 6th, over 100 middle and high school students from across the state gathered in Topeka to stand up to Big Tobacco and advocate for youth tobacco prevention. We know that raising the tax on tobacco products by $1.50 will have a huge health impact in Kansas - and especially on Kansas kids. In addition to the nearly 14,000 young Kansans who will be prevented from smoking as a result of a $1.50 tobacco tax increase, 18,600 current smokers will quit and 9,000 premature smoking-caused deaths will be averted.

Increasing the tax on cigarettes by $1.50 will save lives and prevent death and suffering from cancer and other smoking-caused diseases. I ask that you support this life-saving legislation when it comes up for a vote in your committee.

Sincerely,
