Working together to defeat cancer
Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I hope to work with you this session to reduce the burden of cancer in our state. We know that beating cancer will require public policy changes that prevent cancer, expand access to treatment, and improve quality of life for survivors, patients and their families. This session, ACS CAN will work with the legislature in support of the following priorities: 1. Raise the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products. Tobacco remains the number one preventable cause of cancer and number one preventable cause of death. Raising the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products by $1.50 per pack is a proven way to prevent kids from smoking and help people who smoke quit. 2. Improve quality of life for Kansas families facing serious illness. Palliative care improves quality of life for patients and their families during a serious illness like cancer by addressing issues like pain, nausea, fatigue, depression and other side effects related to a life-changing diagnosis. To improve health and quality of life through palliative care, we support the establishment of a State Advisory Council on Palliative Care and a palliative care consumer and professional information program. 3, Improve access to care. Without health insurance, many people cannot afford to go to the doctor, which means lifesaving tests like mammograms, colonoscopies and other cancer screenings are not done on time or at all. Expanding KanCare will help more Kansans access basic health care, including life-saving cancer screenings and treatment.
