Please give all NY children access to quality physical education opportunities!

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to urge you to sign A.2597/S.5752 which would require public schools to report compliance with physical education requirements to the State Education Department.

Physical inactivity, along with poor diet and excess weight, are linked to 13 different types of cancers. In fact, these risk factors are responsible for approximately 20 percent of annual U.S. cancer cases.

Sadly, many school-aged children are not at a healthy weight or are not physically active. According to the New York State Department of Health, one-third of New York's children are considered overweight or obese.

Children who are overweight and obese are more likely to be overweight and obese adults, increasing their risk for developing cancer and a host of other chronic diseases. In addition, children who are more active have also demonstrated higher scholastic achievement, better classroom behavior, greater ability to focus, and less absenteeism compared to their unfit peers.

Ensuring every child in New York has access to quality physical education and opportunities for additional regular physical activity will afford our children the opportunity to lead happier, healthier, and more productive lives. Please sign A.2597/S.5752 into law!

Sincerely,
