Revenue with lasting benefits
Dear [Decision Maker],
As a Kansan and volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I want you to know that I support a $1.50 cigarette tax increase. And I'm not alone -- 70% of Kansans think this idea makes dollars and sense for our state.
Raising the price of cigarettes is the best way to prevent children from becoming adult smokers. Regular, significant tax increases on tobacco products prevent cancers and other tobacco-related illnesses and deaths. In addition to the health impact, this tax increase will provide the state with predictable, reliable revenue.
Raising the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products by $1.50 will bring between $90-110 million in FY18. The bottom line is that it saves lives, it prevents children from smoking, and it brings needed revenue to the state.
