Invest in Maryland Kids- Restore funding for tobacco use prevention and cessation programs
Dear [Decision Maker],
Please invest in our Maryland's kids and support Senate Bill 113/ House Bill 703 to restore funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs at $21 million in the state's budget. As stated in the Cancer Plan for Maryland, preventing tobacco use among youth and young adults is a primary goal, however funding is not sufficient to maintain a comprehensive program in the state. In 2016, nearly 7,500 people will die from smoking-related causes and 92,000 Maryland kids under the age of 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. 2,500 Maryland youth will become daily smokers this year. Tobacco prevention and cessation programs will help prevent youth from ever using tobacco products and help smokers quit.
