Dear [Decision Maker],
As your constituent and a volunteer of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, I am asking you to support a $1.50 increase in the state's cigarette tax. Doing so will generate new revenue, reduce smoking rates and reduce costs to our economy.
Tobacco is a burden on the physical and economic health of Hoosiers. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in Indiana, which means that nearly 11,000 Hoosiers die each year from their own smoking.
High smoking rates result in high costs for our economy and Hoosier employers, costing Hoosiers $6 billion in healthcare and productivity costs each year. Inaction is too costly.
Estimates by ACS CAN and Tobacco Free Kids show that a $1.50 increase in the cigarette tax will reduce long-term health care costs by $2.11 billion and reduce youth smoking by 17.5%. It will also provide more than $300 million in new revenue.
Please take action to ease Indiana's tobacco burden by supporting a $1.50 increase in the state's cigarette tax in 2017.
