Small tobacco tax, Big Tobacco win

Dear [Decision Maker],

Do you know who likes winning? Big Tobacco.

As your constituent, I am asking you to support a $1.60 per pack increase in the PA cigarette tax and establish a 40% of wholesale tax on all other tobacco products.

We have an opportunity to stand up for Pennsylvania's kids against the interests of the tobacco industry. A $1.60 per pack increase in the PA cigarette tax will prevent 57,600 premature smoking-caused deaths and prevent 91,100 kids from becoming adult smokers.

I want to be clear: to help smokers to quit and keep kids from ever starting, the tax increase must be significant. A small 50 cent per pack increase will not accomplish that goal.

To have a positive impact on health, the tobacco tax increase must be significant. The tobacco industry often supports small cigarette tax increases, which it can offset by discounting and coupon incentives to ensure minimal to no impact on the reduction of tobacco use.

Increase PA's cigarette tax by $1.60 per pack, establish a 40% of wholesale tax on other tobacco products, and invest $26 million in tobacco prevention and cessation programs.

Think of it this way: A small tobacco tax is a Big Tobacco win.

Sincerely,
