Tax all tobacco products

Dear [Decision Maker],

The use of tobacco products remains the nation's number one preventable cause of death. Tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths nationwide including at least 30% of all cancer deaths. There is no safe level or safe type of tobacco use. Pennsylvania remains the only state in the country that does not tax smokeless tobacco.

Establishing a 40 percent of wholesale tax on other tobacco products would produce health and economic benefits for Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is missing out on this revenue opportunity. The 49 states and DC that tax other tobacco products collect over $1.5 billion in tax revenue annually from these taxes.

11.8% of Pennsylvania male high school students use smokeless or spit tobacco. Smokeless tobacco products contain at least 28 cancer causing chemicals. Smokeless tobacco can cause oral, esophageal, and pancreatic cancers as well as precancerous lesions of the mouth, gum recession, bone loss around the teeth and tooth staining.

As you build your FY 2017 budget, help protect Pennsylvania's kids. Increase Pennsylvania's cigarette tax by $1.60 per pack, establish a 40% of wholesale tax on other tobacco products, and invest $26 million into tobacco prevention and cessation programs to save lives and money. Raise it for kids. Raise it for health. Raise it to save lives.
